The Story of Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates an important battle that happened on May 5, 1862 in Mexico. On this day, Mexican soldiers fought against a large army from France. Even though the Mexican army was much smaller, they were able to win the Battle of Puebla!
France had sent their army to Mexico to take control of the country. The Mexican people did not want France to be their ruler. So Mexican soldiers bravely fought to defend their homeland. Even though they were outnumbered, the Mexican soldiers worked as a team and used smart strategies to defeat the much bigger French force.
This victory gave the Mexican people hope and showed that a small group could stand up to a powerful empire. While Mexico’s independence was not totally won on Cinco de Mayo, this battle allowed the country to continue fighting the French for several more years. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico and the United States to remember this important event and the Mexican people’s love of freedom and courage in the face of adversity.
