The History of the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is one of the most famous horse races in the United States. It has been held every year since 1875 at Churchill Downs race track in Louisville, Kentucky.
The race was started by some men who wanted to have horse races and make money from gambling on them. They built Churchill Downs and started hosting races there. The Kentucky Derby was their most important race.
It’s always held on the first Saturday in May. Nearly 150,000 people come to watch the race every year. Two-year-old horses race against each other around the dirt track one and a quarter miles, which is about two kilometers.
The Kentucky Derby is so famous because it’s the first of the three races that make up the Triple Crown of horse racing. To win the Triple Crown, a horse must win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Only 13 horses have ever won all three races.
The Kentucky Derby is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” because the one and a quarter mile race takes less than two minutes for the horses to run. It’s a very fast and exciting race to watch!
