In 1889, there was a big protest in Chicago where workers were fighting for an eight-hour workday. Unfortunately, violence broke out and many people were hurt or killed. This came to be known as the Haymarket affair. After this, May 1st became a day where workers around the world celebrate labor movements and remember those who fought for better working conditions and rights.
