The History of May Day

May Day is a special holiday that is celebrated on May 1st each year. It began in the late 19th century when workers started fighting for better working conditions like an eight-hour workday. At that time, many people had to work very long hours in factories and faced unsafe conditions.

In 1884, there was a big strike where workers across the United States stopped working on May 1st to support an eight-hour workday. They wanted more time to spend with their families instead of working all day. This date became known as May Day. Even though the strike did not succeed right away, it started an important movement.

In 1889, there was a big protest in Chicago where workers were fighting for an eight-hour workday. Unfortunately, violence broke out and many people were hurt or killed. This came to be known as the Haymarket affair. After this, May 1st became a day where workers around the world celebrate labor movements and remember those who fought for better working conditions and rights. Today on May Coloring Pages, many people attend parades, have picnics or concerts to celebrate workers and their contributions.
