Mother’s Day is a special holiday celebrated annually in many countries around the world to honor mothers and express love, gratitude and appreciation for all they do. In the United States, Mother’s Day takes place on the second Sunday in May each year.
The tradition of Mother’s Day began in the 1900s when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia. Her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, was a peace activist who had organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. After Anna’s mother passed away, she felt that mothers should be publicly recognized for their efforts. Anna campaigned to establish a national Mother’s Day and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
On this day, people celebrate mothers and motherhood by presenting gifts, cards, flowers or other tokens of appreciation to their mother. Many also spend quality time with their mothers, taking her out for dinner or an activity. It’s a day to show love and gratitude for all the care, affection and sacrifices mothers provide throughout the year. Mother’s Day recognizes the irreplaceable role that mothers play in our lives.
